Our younger students explore new mediums as they make artworks on themes like tropical landscapes, fantasy characters and so much more. Each class is based on a movie like Frozen, Moana, Monster’s Inc and others. While the movies provide the theme and the students will get to watch small clips from them, the artworks will bring out their own individual styles as they learn new skills and techniques. They draw a single object, animal or landscape and have an open colour palette.

RainbowFish is happy to introduce you to our brand new studio space at Kotturpuram! We can’t wait to introduce our students to the play of light, the wild garden, the library and much more. We even plan to bring in the occasional dog, turtle or rooster to pose as a model. Since the pandemic has made it challenging for our young artists to come to the studio, we will run summer camp live from the studio. Each week will have an animal portrait, a nature study, a still life, an abstract work and a fantasy work. And each week will be different!

Each session will begin with an art prompt. This is not a guided activity but rather the studio will encourage each student to respond differently to the prompt. The purpose of the course is to fuel each student’s imagination. In a session, a student may create one or more responses to an art prompt. We will limit the batch size to 6 students instead of 12 to allow each student to get the individual feedback he or she needs. This class will also dedicate time for students to explain their work and others to give constructive feedback and suggestions for further exploration.

This unique course will allow our younger students to explore a different medium each day of the week. In a typical week, Monday might be Pottery Studio, Tuesday – Sculpture Studio, Wednesday – Print making Studio, Thursday – Collage Studio and Friday – Painting Studio. We will also explore a theme through the week, for example portraits or animals. In one week, we might substitute collage for Photography. Different teacher experts teach each medium but one teacher will remain present on all five days to encourage discussion and documentation of each of the experiences.

In this course, the students will have an animal theme for each project but the course will have a strong focus on contour drawing and will allow the students to use a variety of mediums. This digital photography class is about composition, light, colour and imagination. Students may join this class with a phone camera. Each class will begin with a theme and a challenge and end with a group discussion. Students will learn some simple photo editing techniques and have fun with scale and forced perspective. They will also get to review the works of photographers from around the world. We do encourage students to continue to explore with photography prompts outside of the class.

We take an instructive, demonstrative and practical approach to screen-printing. Students will learn how to translate their drawings and designs into screen stencils, and print them both on paper and fabric. Through this course students will gain an appreciation of the screen-print medium, and its relevance in the modern day world. It is a creative course that embraces experimentation and art whilst laying down a solid foundation. Students, both beginners and experienced alike, will leave the course with a working knowledge of the entire printing process. You can come with existing personal projects or simply with an enquiring mind.

Sculpture Studio

The sculpture class will explore techniques like coiling, slab, pinching and students will learn to use clay tools to add details to their sculptures. Students also get an exposure to working with Plaster of Paris and use recycled objects to create fantastic and whimsical sculptures. We will reference sculptors like Rodin, Subodh Gupta, Henry Moore, K.G.Subramanyan and many others. Students can opt to fire a few of the articles they create at our studio. Students will also get a change to make their own pots and sculptures using an electric wheel. For this class we have guest artist teachers who skillfully guide the students.

This course allows the students to explore light and shadow, texture, depth and perspective in its entirety before introducing colour. Students also learn basic outlining with ink and ink wash techniques. Our Shading Pencil, Charcoal and Watercolours class explores techniques of artists from India and abroad who have mastered these mediums. Our students will also experiment with watercolours as an illustration style, inspired by popular illustrators from around the world.

This course begins with experiments with warm colours and cool colours using pastels and paint. Using some of the children’s favorite books like ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and ‘Elmer the Elephant’, we will explore the crayon resist technique with ink, using tissue paper, a toothbrush and an ear bud to learn various techniques with paint.  This is a fun workshop that combines two of their favorite things, storytelling and art!

In this course, we will create more tactile art. In an attempt to push the boundaries of texture and pattern students will use techniques from print-making, collage and layering techniques to create work that both literally and visually breaks out of the flat surface of painted paper.  We will also practice elements of scale, proportion, contour drawing and other art fundamentals.

This course for our younger students encourages them to observe the world around them and draw from observation. We keep shapes simple while experimenting freely with colour and texture. The themes in the class range from animals, people, objects and even some simple abstraction. Hands, clay and fire. Ceramic pottery is an art form based on very simple materials and tools entwined with the unique creativity of an individual. Mechanical Marvels

This course explores all kinds of machines, not just robots from Star Wars and Transformers, or even the dancing robots we love from Boston Dynamics…but the amazing mechanical sculptures of the artist Theo Jansen that can “walk” along beaches powered only by the wind. The detailed drawings Leonardo Da Vinci did of machines to make his dreams of flying come true. And how can we forget the incredible whimsical designs by Rube Goldberg of machines to scratch your back or brush your teeth. We will use machines as a way to expand our imagination, step into design thinking and learn art fundamentals. This course will use more pen and ink and sketching pencils and well as colour pencils. The focus will be on scale, proportion and various shading techniques.

Come escape with us into fantasy lands that you get to build from scratch! We will create completely unique worlds based on different themes, and you are the main architect: of everything from the environments and buildings, to the characters and creatures! Underwater kingdoms, new planets, candy lands and more: we will use different art styles and techniques to bring your concepts and out-of-this-world ideas to life. The end of term portfolio will include concept sketches of landscapes, details, imaginary plants and animals and characters. Several of these sketches will be selected and expanded to create detailed coloured worlds.
