The Art lab course was designed to introduce our students to the very important concept of understanding the elements of art through small experiments and explorations. The 6 elements of art students will learn about are line, shape, form, colour, value and texture. Each class will focus on one element, first through the work of important artists followed by group discussion and then an activity. In the final weeks students will work on projects combining the various elements effectively in a composition.-

Create nature-inspired designs, draw and create using natural materials, mixed media and explore nature in our special indoor/outdoor studio. In this course, we take students through the process of creating harmonious compositions inspired by the natural world. We will learn about how artists and designers use Nature as their muse like Nikolai Tolsty from Russia who combines photos with animal stencils to create surprising results or Collage and installation artist Clare Celeste Borsche who uses nature as inspiration for the immersive collages she creates.-

Here we are introducing the theme of the sky and everything that it brings to mind - birds, insects, flying machines, outer space and so much more. This course mixes reality with a sprinkling of fantasy and the resultant artworks promise to be colourful and exciting, all the while encouraging important art concepts and techniques. While the course is primarily in 2D, we do plan to bring in some 3D craft aspects as well.-

This exciting course includes portraiture and figure drawing with an emphasis on creating a memorable character. The characters will have back stories and students will learn how to add small details that support the character’s age, personality and context. Further into the course, we will introduce a narrative element to create a backdrop for the characters that is consistent and rich with meaning. We will learn by observing and discussion artworks by major artists around the world and incorporate those learnings into our own works. This course will include descriptive writing, presentation and constructive peer critique.-

This course explores all kinds of machines, not just robots from Star Wars and Transformers, or even the dancing robots we love from Boston Dynamics...but the amazing mechanical sculptures of the artist Theo Jansen that can “walk” along beaches powered only by the wind. The detailed drawings Leonardo Da Vinci did of machines to make his dreams of flying come true. And how can we forget the incredible whimsical designs by Rube Goldberg of machines to scratch your back or brush your teeth. We will use machines as a way to expand our imagination, step into design thinking and learn art fundamentals. This course will use more pen and ink and sketching pencils and well as colour pencils. The focus will be on scale, proportion and various shading techniques.-

That not only do peacock spiders dance to attract their mate, but one lucky species has a pattern that looks like Van Gogh’s starry night. In this course, students explore different media and techniques to create artworks inspired by all things flora and fauna.
